Gautama Buddha was born in 563 B.C. He was the son of the king of the Sakyas and was given the name Siddhartha. He lived a rich, pleasant life until he saw suffering for the first time as a young man. He then renounced his title and embraced asceticism.
Siddhartha meditated under a Bodhi tree on suffering and its causes and solutions. During his meditation he was almost deterred by the forces of temptation (Mara). To challenge Mara, he placed his hand upon the ground to show his strength and commitment. Thus, the earth touching pose is a gesture of determination and his right to be there.
After enlightenment he went on to teach. That is what is depicted here. He is giving the mudra of teaching in this statue.
